Vern Yancey

Mr. Vern Yancey, age 70 of Cobden, entered into his Lord's presence at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014 at his home. He was born October 7, 1943 in Anna, the son of Clel and Gladys "Judy" Landis Yancey. He married Phyllis Houseman on March 22, 1980 in Anna. Vern is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Yancey of Cobden; two daughters, Tara Yancey Brokovich of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Nancy (Tom) Heil of Carterville; one son, Mike (Tina) Westbrook of Murphysboro; eight grandchildren, Brooklyn Yancey, Peyton Brokovich, Erika Brokovich, Taylor Heil, Seth Heil, Kenny (Jennifer) Word, Josh Westbrook, Dustin (Chelsea) Westbrook; one great grandchild, Kelly Westbrook; brothers and sisters, J.D. (Ruth) Yancey of Ellsinore, MO, Kay Smoot of Poplar Bluff, MO, Dean (Carlene) Yancey of Harvard, IL, Pat Ceren of Jacksonville, FL, and Randy (Paula) Yancey of Dexter; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Eric Yancey. Vern was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Cobden. He worked for 30 years in law enforcement. He was the Chief of Police for the Cobden Police Department and served as Deputy Sherriff for the Union County Sherriff's Department. Vern was an avid firearm collector and dealer and qualified marksman and loved to hunt and fish. Funeral services for Mr. Vern Yancey will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden with Doug Bridgeman officiating. Interment will be in the Cobden Cemetery. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. and until the service hour at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Cobden.
