Tomas Peter "Tom" Bacon

Mr. Thomas "Tom" Peter Bacon, age 81 of Anna, died at 11:50 a.m., Thursday, September 18, 2014 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born January 25, 1933 in Anna, the son of George A. and Ruth Sifford Bacon. Tom was a lifelong member of Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in Anna where he was baptized in 1933, making him the oldest baptized member of the congregation. He loved his church and sang in the choir for 45 years. He graduated from AJCHS in 1951 and briefly attended the University of Illinois before being called to active duty in the U.S Army during the Korean Conflict during 1952-53. He was discharged in 1953 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served at Camp Cook, California, Ft. Lewis, Washington, and Camp Desert Rock, Nevada where he participated in the Nuclear Bomb Tests. Tom served briefly as Secretary/Treasurer of the Anna Building and Loan Association. He joined his uncle, Lynn Sifford in the insurance business and made it his lifelong career. He owned and operated Sifford Insurance Agency for many years, then joined Taylor Dodd and Wood in his later years. He loved Anna and the rolling hills of Southern Illinois where he played golf with his friends for 50 years. Tom is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Martha and Mark Kelly of St. Augustine, Florida; one sister, Betsy Flamm of Webster, Indiana; three beloved cousins, Sue Galt of Monticello, Jodie Steggerda of Dearborn, MI, Nancy McGarry of St. Petersburg Beach, FL; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his much loved daughter, Mary Beth Bacon; and his dear companion of twenty years, Ruby Boswell. Per his wishes, Tom will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at the Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in Anna at a later date. Memorials may be made to Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church or P.A.W.S. of Anna. Memorial envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
