Norma Jean (Hines) Mertes

Norma Jean Mertes, age 92 of Indianapolis, IN, formerly of Union County, died Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Traditions Solana in Indianapolis, IN. She was born August 27, 1932 in Cobden, the daughter of Oley Dallas and Ruby (Caraker) Hines. She married Jerry R. Mertes on September 15, 1953 in Carbondale. He preceded her in death on November 16, 2019.

Norma is survived by her sister, Peggy A. Bittle of Cape Girardeau, MO; nephew, Bradley (Lori) Bittle; great niece, Erin Bittle Jones (Ben); great nephew, Jeffrey Bittle; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry R. Mertes and brother-in-law, Ron Bittle.

Norma was a member of the First Baptist Church in Indianapolis for many years. She worked as the accounts payable supervisor for Mayflower Transit until her retirement.

Graveside funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at the Anna Cemetery. Interment will immediately follow. Those attending are asked to go directly to the cemetery.
