Mrs. Majel S. Lence, of Easton, MD, born December 20, 1921 in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the eldest child of L. Ray and Lottie (Black) Stephens, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in Easton. Majel grew up in the Mount Ayr area. After graduation, she refused to succumb to the devastation the Great Depression had taken on the family finances, and proceeded to work her way through college. She earned teaching certifications for elementary school, often teaching in rural one room school houses. It was during her college years she met the love of her life, Richard H. Lence. They met on Valentine's Day 1944, and after committing to a long engagement, they were married on November 28, the same year! Together they built an amazing life together, working, traveling abroad and most importantly, loving and supporting each other. After Richard passed away, Majel's work brought her to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. At the age of 64, she began her USPS career, taking pride in her job and continuing to work for 15 years before deciding to retire. Anyone meeting Majel was immediately impressed with her positive attitude and immense generosity. Her heart far exceeded the confines of her body. This lovely lady was a true example of elegance and sophistication, while at the same time remaining a humble servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Majel was pre-deceased by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Joyce Upchurch and Delores Jean Stephens; three brothers, John Vernon, Gary Lee and Alonzo Donald Stephens. Survivors include her brother, L. Thomas Stephens of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Marguerite Burke of Burnsville, Minnesota; one niece, Abbie Burke-Herzog; three nephews, John R. Burke, Stephen A. Upchurch, and John T. Upchurch and a multitude of cousins and friends who will always cherish the memories made by spending time with her. Funeral services for Majel S. Lence will be conducted on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro with the Pastor David Eidson officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may call at the Rendleman & Hileman funeral home in Jonesboro on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 10:00 am until the funeral hour at 11:00 am.
