Dr. Lawrence E. Larson

Lawrence E. Larson Ph.D., age 87 of Georgetown, TX, formerly of Southern Illinois, died Tuesday, June 11, 2024 in Georgetown, TX.  Larry was born September 8, 1936 in Chicago, IL. to the late Laurence S. Larson and Fern Miller of Marion, IL.  Larry married Ruth Shirley Brasel in 1960.

Dr. Larson is survived by his wife Ruth S. Larson-Brasel of Florence, TX; his daughter, Lynn S. Larson and husband Alfredo V. Mendoza; two sons Keith E. Larson and wife Ursula Engler of Sevelen, SG, Switzerland and Kurt A. Larson and wife Susan M. Parry of Fellsmere, FL; four grandchildren Caroline A. Bloom of Leicester, N.C., Justin L. Mendoza and wife Laura of Austin, TX., Matthew W. Larson of Sevelen, SG, Switzerland and Celine N. Larson of Sevelen, SG, Switzerland. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Clarence E. Larson and Raymond A. Larson.  He will be missed by his many cousins and friends.

Dr. Larson's hobbies have included photography, astronomy, and many years with the Boy Scouts of America. He has received the 5th level plus at IBM.  Some 60+ papers etc. have been documented by them to his credit.   Since 2006, Larry has been teaching in Killeen, TX at the University.  It is part of Texas A&M. He went there to work part time.

Dr. Larson's accomplishments include 9 worldwide patents. He has also been credited with numerous recognitions and honors to include, elected chair of the U.C.T. faculty senate from 1997-1998, numerous IBM inventions, and outstanding contributions and innovation awards. He was elected ACM President of the Southern Tier ACM Chapter from 1976 to 1984. Dr. Larson was also recognized as a leader by being elected as a B.S.A. Scout Commissioner, having responsibilities for an average of 16 units while serving as a Committee Chairman from 1976-1984. In 1979, Dr. Larson was presented with the ACM/IEEE Doctoral Forum Award.

Dr. Larry Larson earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics at Southern Illinois University in 1959. He was awarded his Master of Arts degree in Mathematics in 1960 from the University of Illinois.   Dr. Larson left academia and joined the IBM corporation in 1960 where he worked for the next 32 years. During that time, he worked on his PhD and was awarded a Doctor of Advanced Technology from the State University of New York in 1976. In addition to his 32 years with IBM, Dr. Larson has industry experience in consulting and owning his own software business.

Dr. Larson continued in academia as a professor of Management Information Systems at Tarleton State University, in Killeen, Texas for 20 plus years. He left Texas A&M Central Texas in January 2014
