L. Dean Short

    L. Dean Short, age 69 of Anna, passed away Friday, May 29, 2026 at Deaconess Regional Healthcare in Marion. He was born on March 17, 1957 in Pikeville, KY, the son of Jim and Reba (Belcher) Short. He married Gail Wickman on September 24, 1978.

    Dean is survived by his wife, Gail Short; children, Jason Short and wife Jade, Zachary Short and wife Kacey, Katie Goss and husband Michael and Sarah Mead and husband Gabe; grandchildren, Emma Bowman and husband Kim “Beau”, Mady Mead, Alivia Mead, Cooper Brinkerhoff, Chanel Short, Hank Goss, Charolette Goss, Penelope Short, Gigi Short and Clair Short; great-granddaughter, Andromeda Bowman; his father, Jim Short and wife; siblings, Steve Short and wife Susan, Tina Short and Keith Short and wife Jen; Cozumel Pruett, whom he considered a daughter as well as the McBride kids; dear friend, Mary Powles; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Reba Short and cherished friends, Pam and Steve McBride.

    Dean was a strong Christian man with a deep faith and love for the Lord. He was a loving and caring family man. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was an amazing dad to his children and their friends. He was owner of Short Enterprises, based in Anna and a restauranteur owning McDonalds restaurants in many local communities. A true philanthropist, Dean enjoyed giving back to the community, sponsoring countless local ball teams and community events. He was a great supporter of Southern Illinois University.

    Graveside funeral services for Dean Short will be held at 11:00 am Monday, June 1, 2026 at the Jonesboro Cemetery with Bill Littrell officiating. Interment will follow. Those attending are asked to gather at the cemetery prior to the service. Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Anna is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions can be made to the Carmi Baptist Children’s Home. Envelopes will be available at the cemetery and Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home.
