Mrs. Kathern "Katie" Newton, age 94 of Jonesboro, died at 10:22 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012 at her home in Jonesboro. She was born November 3, 1917 in Waterville, Kansas, the daughter of Rev. Clark S. and May Meyer Powell. She married Edward "Bud" Newton on November 1, 1941 in Oregon, Illinois. Kathern is survived by her husband Bud Newton of Jonesboro; one daughter, Karen Oduola of Jonesboro; one son, Clark (Janice) Newton of Jonesboro; six grandsons; five great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one brother, Charles (Edith) Powell of Hustler, Wisconsin; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Meta Cozby. Kathern was a member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jonesboro. She was a member of the Southern Illinois Organ GuildKathern taught music for many years at both Jonesboro and Cobden Schools. Funeral services for Mrs. Kathern "Katie" Newton will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jonesboro with Pastor David Eidson officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jonesboro.
