John M. Stokes

Mr. John M. Stokes, age 93 of Jonesboro, died at 11:22 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in the Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born April 29, 1921 in Union County, the son of Moses and Nora Tripp Stokes. He married Maxine Lingle on April 26, 1965 in Carbondale. John is survived by his loving wife, Maxine Stokes of Jonesboro; one daughter, Jennifer (Steve) Brown of Anna; one son, Billy Travis of Anna; six grandchildren, Michael Brown, Lisa Mowell, Rachel and Jeremy Travis, Crystal Valletta, Kari Hogue; eight great grandchildren; one daughter in law, Pat Mowell of Anna; one sister, Marjorie (Earl) Hunt of Peoria; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, John Mowell. John was a member of the Anna First Baptist Church. Early in his career John worked as a guard at the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill IL. He then transferred to Choate Mental Health where he worked as a technician until his retirement. John proudly served his country in the United States Marines. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater, and was involved in battles at Luzon and the Southern Philippines. Funeral services for Mr. John M. Stokes will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro with Rev. Les Sinks officiating. Interment will be in the Casper Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Carroll P. Foster Post #3455 of the V.F.W. in Anna and the Marine Honor Guard Team. Friends may call from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Illinois Veteran's Home Activity Fund or the Anna First Baptist Church. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro.
