Joe J. Smith

Joe J. Smith, age 72 of Jonesboro, died Sunday, January 10, 2021 at his home. He was born August 18, 1948 in Anna, the son of Ellis and Virginia (Hamel) Smith. Joe is survived by three sons, Little Joe (Samantha) Smith of Grand Tower, James Lee Smith of Jonesboro and Danny (Carol) Hancock of Ware; seven grandchildren, Dustin, Ethan, Bam, Rusty, Morgan, Bridget and Daniel; two great-grandchildren, Remi and Bailey; girlfriend, Mary Norris of Jonesboro; siblings, Margaret (Larry) Dale of Jonesboro, Grace (Butch) Norton of Wolf Lake, Kathryn (John) Yow of Carbondale, Elvis (Judy) Smith of Vienna, and Ellis (Ruby) Smith of Wolf Lake; nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Harold Smith. Joe honorably served his country in The United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked many years as a diesel mechanic. Graveside funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, January 14, 2021 in the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City, Illinois. Military rites will be performed by the local area Veterans and the Illinois Army National Guard Honors Team of Marion. Everyone attending the service will be required to wear face covering and observe social distancing guidelines.
