Mr. Jean H. Roberts, age 91 of Anna, graduated to Heaven at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2014 at his home. He was born September 16, 1923 in Galatia, the son of John and Ethel Douglass Roberts. He married Virginia Rae Loveless on March 24, 1945 in Monroe City, Indiana. She preceded him in death in 2006. Jean is survived by his daughter, Vicki (Michael) Carlin of Spring Green, WI; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; special lady friend, Connie "Fifi" Mays of Anna; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Rae Roberts; two brothers, Joe D. Roberts and David W. Roberts. Jean was born in a log cabin house with a separate log cabin kitchen, like in George Washington's day, two miles south of Galatia. Since he was two years old, he grew up on a small farm one and one quarter miles northeast of Galatia. He went to Cedar Point School until the fifth grade. He then went to middle school (sixth through eighth grades) in Galatia, then graduated from Galatia High School. He then took one year post-graduate in Eldorado High School, prerequisite to electrical engineering college at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. His college was interrupted by World War II. With and early honorable discharge, he came to work in an aircraft factory in Evansville, IN, whereby he met and married Virginia Rae Loveless, daughter of Emmett and Mae (Toutman) Loveless. He then went to work for AT & T. After extensive travel he settled in AT & T's Radio and Television Operation Department in Chicago. From there he was transferred to the Test-Board operation in Indianapolis, and from there to their circuit-layout engineering office in Cincinnati, and from there back to their Communications Engineering Department in Chicago where he retired after nearly forty years with AT & T. He retired in his wife' s home town of Petersburg, IN. He organized a country band and played the violin and harmonica around nursing homes in Southwest IN for ten years. Also, during this ten years he was chosen by the Mayor of Petersburg, IN to chair a committee to establish a long needed comprehensive planning and zoning commission for future growth of residences and businesses. During the twenty three years of retirement in Petersburg, he was a weather spotter for Fox Channel 7 TV News in Evansville, IN for 15 years. He also ran a column in the Petersburg-Press entitled "The Bible has the Answer". This column ran for 10 years with permission from the publisher of Creation Scientist's literature. During his retirement in Petersburg, IN, he was very active member in the First Baptist Church. His wife passed away after sixty one years of marriage in 2006, whereby he moved back to Galatia, his home town. There his life took a one hundred eighty degree turn. He started dancing by country music bands in Southern Illinois where he met a wonderful lady, Connie Mays from Anna, and together they have traveled abroad and have been dancing ever since. He attended the Church of the Nazarene in Anna. Funeral services for Mr. Jean H. Roberts will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Dr. Richard Keeley officiating. Interment will be in the Walnut Hills Cemetery in Petersburg, IN at 2:00pm Wednesday October 8, 2014. Friends may call from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
