Janie Peterson

    Janie Peterson, 76, of Las Vegas, NV, formerly of Dongola, IL, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, July 20, 2026 at 5:55 PM in Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas. Janie passed peacefully and was surrounded by loved ones. Born on November 1, 1949, in Anna IL, Janie was the daughter of Les and Margie Wright. Janie married Tom Peterson on January 11, 1968, and they were married for 45 years.

    Janie is survived by her three sons and their wives: Jeff and Katie Peterson of Marion, IL, Jody and Cherie Peterson of St. Johns, FL, and Travis and Mitzi Peterson of Las Vegas, NV. Also mourning her loss are her brother and sister-in-law, Les and Barbara Wright of Buncombe, IL. Janie is also survived by six loving grandchildren—Taylor, Valarie, Abigail and husband Noah, Alyssa, Josiah, and Owen—two wonderful great grandsons—Jude and Bowie—a niece—Nicole Roach and her sweet family—three grandpuppies—Cheyenne, Wally, and Rhea—and a host of others who loved her dearly. Janie was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

    Mama (or even Ma) to many, Janie was beloved as a kind and giving lady. It would be impossible to mention all the young people from southern Illinois who found the Peterson home to be a happy and safe place to visit, to have a meal, or even to stay. Janie served as village clerk in Dongola for nearly 30 years and loved visiting with all who stopped by her office. Janie was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, a lover of meals and travel with friends and family, a generous giver to a variety of causes, a collector of owls (many, many owls), an avid antique-hunter with her dear friend Shirley, an active part of the Beta Eta Theta Sorority,  a part of the WWE Universe with her grandchildren, and, especially important to her in her final years, a faithful and beloved member of Providence Reformed Church of Las Vegas.

    After retiring, Janie suffered a stroke and spent time recovering in the home of Jody and Cherie in Florida. She then moved to Las Vegas where she lived out her remaining years in the home of Travis and Mitzi. During that season, she treasured her visits to be with Jeff, Katie, and the family in southern Illinois. It was a true blessing for her family to be able to spend time with her and care for her in her latter years.

    Graveside services for Janie Peterson will be held this fall in the American Legion Cemetery in Dongola. Arrangements will be announced later.
