Mr. Herschel Morris Lyerla, age 75 of Chatham, formerly of Cobden and New Orleans, LA, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at his home. He was born October 18, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Leland and Myrtle (Sisk) Lyerla. He married Adell Mary House on February 20, 1993. Herschel attended Anna Community High School before he went into the United States Navy. He worked in the lab for the State of Louisiana, Department of Transportation until he retired in 1999. He enjoyed music his entire life; he played drums, guitar, mandolin and sang in several country western and gospel bands. Later in life, he worshiped God with his musical gifts in churches throughout southern Illinois. Herschel will be greatly missed by his wife of 23 years, Adell Mary (House) Lyerla of Chatham; son, Aaron (Chi) Lyerla of Virginia Beach, VA; two daughters, Lesley Lyerla of Livingston, LA and Shelly (Todd) Cleveland of Maurepas, LA; six grandchildren and one great grandchild; five brothers, Don (Juanita) Lyerla of Cuba, MO, Victor (Glenda) Lyerla of Phenix City, AL, Harold (Lawanda) Lyerla of Alto Pass, Curtis Lyerla of Cobden and Jim (Brenda) Lyerla of Alto Pass; two sisters, Sherry (Rod) Wofford and Shelba Vandergraph, both of Farmington, MO; two sisters-in-law, Cynthia Caronna of College Station, TX and Laura (Joe) Guidry of Bedico, LA; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Myrtle Lyerla; infant brother, Ralph Lyerla; three sisters, Frieda Qualls, Bonnie Sheets and Thelma Skaggs. A memorial service will be Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Alto Pass Pentecostal Church with Rev. Bill Carter officiating. Interment will be in the Alto Pass Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Carroll P. Foster Post #3455 of the V.F.W. in Anna and the Navy Funeral Honor Detail. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 in the Alto Pass Pentecostal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to K9s4COPs or www.K9s4COPs.org/donate. Envelopes will be available in the Alto Pass Pentecostal Church and Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
