Herbert Eugene Gene "Cowboy" Smith, age 64 of Kevil, Ky died Thursday, April 1, 2021 at his home. He was born December 14, 1956 in Advance, Mo, the son of Herbert N. and Ruby Mae (Dodd) Smith. He married Jesse Smith and they had two children together. He later married Jolee Koehler. Gene is survived by his wife, Jolee of Kevil, Ky; son, James (Angie) Smith of Dongola; two grandchildren, Katie and Lexie; mother, Ruby Mae Smith of Aberdeen, MS; three brothers, Larry (Sabrina) Smith of Jonesboro, Tom Smith, Buddy (Candy) Smith all of Aberdeen, MS; two sisters, Michelle Hale and Melissa Thornberry; first wife, Jesse Smith; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert N. Smith; daughter, Rebecca Smith. Gene honorably served in the Army National Guard. He was a Union carpenter for many years. He was so talented in so many things including painting, gardening, songwriting and plucking the strings on his guitar. Gene's smile, contagious personality, and sense of humor will be missed most of all. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro with Rev. Danny Jones officiating. Interment will be in McCrite Cemetery in Tamms. Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. and until the service hour at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Everyone attending will be required to wear face coverings and observe social distancing guidelines. Maximum occupancy of the building will be limited to 50 persons at one time.
