Getty Edward Abernathy, age 81 of Wolf Lake, died at 8:56 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2018 in the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born June 18, 1937 in Wolf Lake the son of Moses Edward and Mina Sadie Bell (Kimmel) Abernathy. He married Wanda Lee (Elkins) on April 30, 1960 in Galilee Baptist Church in Wolf Lake. She preceded him in death on August 22, 2001. Getty is survived by his son, Scott (Rhonda) Abernathy of Jonesboro, daughter, Lana (Dale) Cochrane of Anna; special friend, Sherry Wilson of Wolf Lake; five grandchildren, Jason (Tricia) Spurlock, Josh (Kimberly) Spurlock, Hillary (Dusty) Miller, Hailley Abernathy and Steven Cochrane; six great grandchildren, Hallie Miller, James Spurlock, Jackson Spurlock, Wyatt Spurlock, Zachary Spurlock and McKenzie Spurlock; sister, Merline Karn of Warren, WI; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents & wife, Wanda Lee Abernathy; and brother, Leo Abernathy. Getty was a member of the Galilee Baptist Church in Wolf Lake. He was a member of the Anna Masonic Lodge #520 and Life member of the Jonesboro Masonic Lodge #111 A.F. & A. M., and was also a life member of the N.R.A. He was an Ainad Shriner's, for many years, and lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. As a native of Wolf Lake, Getty was involved in many community activities. He ran the Texaco Station in town from 1962 to 1975. He sold Metropolitan Life Insurance from the late 1970's to early 1980's. His most loved career was the commercial fishing he did on the Mississippi River. He met many different people over the years on the river until he retired in 1999. Funeral services for Getty Edward Abernathy will be at 1:00p.m. on Monday, July 2, 2018 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro with Brother Jack Thornton officiating. Interment will be in the Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2018 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Everyone is asked to dress casual and wear their favorite St. Louis Cardinals attire for the funeral.
