Mr. Francis Edward "Ed" Heern, age 79, of Carbondale, died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Illinois Veteran's Home in Anna. He was born July 11, 1932 in Carbondale, the son of Carl E. and Lela Tabouring Heern. He married Wilma Dean Nance on March 10, 1956 in Murphysboro. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Wilma Heern of Carbondale; two daughters, Donna (Gary) Bennett and Linda Diane (Greg) Glasford both of Carbondale; one son, Mark E. (Jayne) Heern of Carbondale; three grandchildren, Crystal (Jon) Casper of Carbondale, Cody (Cassie) Heern of Jonesboro, Brittany Heern of Sesser; three great grandchildren, Tera and Lane Cooper, Mark L. Heern; one brother, Jim (Helen) Heern of Alto Pass; one sister, Virginia Waddington of Carbondale; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tommy Heern; one sister Dorothy Nance; and one grandson, Thomas Dale Heern.Ed was a member of the Makanda Baptist Church for many years. He worked for Lingle Trucking Company and later for the Illinois Department of Conservation, retiring after 32 years of service. Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954.Ed found great joy from farming, horseback riding, camping, driving a team of horses and wagon. His family would like to express their great appreciation for the staff at the Illinois Veteran's Home in Anna for their love and care shown to Ed and his family. Funeral services for Mr. Francis Edward "Ed" Heern will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Makanda Baptist Church in Makanda with Rev. Dennis Nance officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Makanda. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Team of Marion. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Makanda Baptist Church in Makanda. Memorial contributions may be made to the Makanda Baptist Church, Evergreen Cemetery or the Illinois Veteran's Home Activity Fund.
