Ernest "Speedy" Elder, age 85 of Cobden, died Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Marion V.A. Medical Center Community Living Center in Marion. He was born November 12, 1933, the son of David and Clara (Robertson) Elder. He married Chris Garan on September 5, 1992 in Sherman Mills, ME. Speedy is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Chris Elder of Cobden; sons, John (Stephanie) Elder of Arizona, Gene (Gabbie) Elder of Germany, Charles (Allison) Elder of New Hampshire; stepsons, Michael (Jessica) Garan of Maine, Andrew (Stephanie) Garan of Maine; many grandchildren; great grandchildren; one sister, Grace E. Garner of Cobden; two brothers David E. (Tana) Elder of Peterburger, and Raymond (Mary Ellen) Elder of Mattoon; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Debra Kay Moreland-Thibodeau; sisters Rose Marie Sellars and Katherine Jane Balance. Ernest was a life member of the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 V.F.W. in Anna, and the D.A.V. He was a member of the Anna Moose and Elks Lodge, and the Mason Lodge of Maine. He loved to go fishing, hunting, golfing, and morrell mushroom hunting. Speedy proudly served his country in the United States Navy for twenty years as an electrician on various submarines. After retirement from the Navy he moved to Maine and was a Master Maine Guide for hunting and fishing. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday March 3, 2019 at the Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 V.F.W. in Anna. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion VA Community Living Center or the American Parkinson Disease Association. Memorial envelopes will be available at the VFW in Anna and the Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home.
