Mr. Clarence E. "Smitty" Smith, age 69 of Anna, died at 12:47 a.m., Friday, August 19, 2011 at Union County Hospital in Anna. He was born April 13, 1942 in Decatur, IL the son of Clarence E. and Helen Lee Smith. He married Jan Alexander on August 25, 1963 in Decatur, IL. Clarence is survived by his wife, Jan Smith of Anna; 1 daughter, Shelly (Alan) Stadelbacher of Anna; and 1 son, Gregg (Anna) Smith of Maryville, IL; 4 grandchildren, Lukus Stadelbacher, Tanner Stadelbacher, Joseph Smith, and Payton Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Jim (Marcia) Alexander of St. Louis, MO; nieces and nephews, Ken( Lisa) Smith of Marion, IL, Christina Waldman of Rochester, NY, Karen (Bill) Zielman of Streator, IL, and Scott (Ginny) Smith of Waterford, MI; cousins, Ray and Shirley Lee of Riverton, IL; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth Smith. Clarence was a member of the Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in Anna where he served on the church council. He was a member of the Anna-Jonesboro Elks Lodge #1641 and the Anna Chamber of Commerce and served on the Rural Health Board of Directors. Clarence graduated from SIU-Carbondale in 1964 and then graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1968 with a master's degree in social work. Clarence was a man of many talents. He was employed as a Union painter, and then worked as a social worker for the State of Illinois for many years where he was largely responsible for the development of the Community Health programs in southern Illinois. He retired from Jamestown Management Corporation. He also owned and operated Smith's Clothing Store in Anna with his wife, Jan. Clarence enjoyed life to the fullest and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Funeral services for Clarence E. "Smitty" Smith will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 21, 2011 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Pastor Kathy Montira officiating. Interment will be in the Anna Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m, Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. Memorials may be made to Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
