Mr. Carrol Grammer, age 88 of Makanda, died at 6:05 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014 in the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. He was born March 28, 1926 in Wolf Lake, the son of James Andrew and Elsie Lily Hood Grammer. He married Julia Lawrence on September 17, 1950 in El Monte, California. Carrol is survived by his loving wife, Julia Grammer of Makanda; one daughter, Carroljane "C.J." of Makanda; one brother, Jim Grammer of Los Angles, California; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lawrence Andrew Grammer; three brothers and one sister. Carrol was a member of the First Baptist Church in Makanda for many years. He loved playing basketball and baseball at the Wolf Lake High School; he later played basketball for Murray State. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, serving there eighteen months. Carrol worked as a water supervisor at various water plants. He also worked as a heavy machine operator during his life. Carrol served on the Makanda Village Board for twenty years. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan and would watch their games any chance he had. Carrol loved to grow and care for his vegetable garden; he was known for his generosity, giving away many of the vegetables he grew. Funeral services for Mr. Carrol Grammer will be at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna with Rev. Cliff Waller and Rev. David Stewart officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Makanda. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Carroll P. Foster Post #3455 of the V.F.W. in Anna and the Illinois Army National Guard Military Honors Team of Marion. Friends may call after 10:00 and until the service hour at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church in Makanda. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home in Anna.
