Betty L. Smith-Norton

Betty L. Smith-Norton, age 90 of Cobden, died Tuesday, March 5, 2019 in Union County Long Term Care in Anna. She was born December 29, 1928 in Cobden, the daughter of Sherman and Maude (Smith) Smith. She married Jake Norton on April 21, 1950 in Cobden. He preceded her in death on August 15, 1972. Betty is survived by nieces and nephews, Susan and Jeff Forby of Cobden, Deanna Smith of Cobden, Jim (Joan) Smith of Carterville, and Duane Smith of Wolf Lake; many great nieces and nephews; other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake Norton; infant son, Richard W. Norton; brothers, Jackie Dale Smith and Clyde Smith; and sister-in-law, Geneva Smith. Betty was a very active and loyal member of Immanuel Praise and Worship Center in Cobden. She taught Sunday School and would make many delicious pies for the chicken and dumpling dinners at the church. In 1951 she and her husband moved to Dixion where she worked for twenty nine years for the Dixion State School as the head supervisor in dietary. Years later she moved back to Cobden to enjoy her retirement. . Graveside funeral services for Betty L. Norton will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. in the Cobden Cemetery with Pastor Carl Dillow officiating. Interment will follow. Everyone attending is asked to go directly to the cemetery.
