Mrs. Betty Jean (Odle) Hutton, age 86 of Anna, died at 3:12 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2016 in the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO. She was born in Hamilton County, IL on September 25, 1929, the daughter of Ted and Edna (Senner) Odle. She married Bob J. Hutton on January 8, 1954 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Carbondale. They shared 53 years of marriage together. Betty is survived by her four daughters, Charisse Laudone of Anna; Betsy (Alan) Flamm of Cobden, Lisa (Steve) Hartline of Anna, Shari (Ronald) Van Meter of Anna; seven grandchildren, Brandi Wheeler, Kyle (Amy) Wheeler, Andrew Laudone, Joshua Flamm, Marissa Flamm, Matthew (Carrie) Hartline, Jonathan Van Meter; five great grandchildren, Taylor Newman, Dalton Newman, Lillie Mae Hartline, Emery Wheeler, and Nora Wheeler; three brothers, James Odle of Marion, William (Bonnie) Odle of Rio Rancho, NM, George Odle of Marion; two sisters, Anne Odle of Pflugerville, TX, Mary Odle of Anna, and other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob J. Hutton; one sister, Dorothy Brown. Betty graduated from Mcleansboro High School in 1948. She graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in History, she then earned her Master's degree in Library Science. Order Librarian Betty Hutton, retired on April 30, 1991, after spending many years on the SIU Carbondale campus. She began working for SIU in the Order Department of the library in Wheeler Hall in August 1952 as a Library Clerk III under Order Librarian John McCord. Betty had just graduated from SIU and was beginning part-time work on a Master's degree in History. During 1954 Betty worked half-time in Order and half-time in Cataloging. In 1955, the library move to Morris Library and Betty was promoted to Chief Clerk in the Order Department where she stayed until July 1957 when she moved with her husband to Washington, DC. During the spring and summer of 1960, Betty returned to Morris Library and worked in the Cataloging Department cuttering IMC books for Golda Hankla. In the fall of 1960 the Huttons moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, but by July of 1963, they were back in Southern Illinois and Betty was back in the Order Department working for Alton Juhlin. At that time she also began working on a Master's degree in Instructional Materials. In 1967 Betty was appointed to the faculty as an assistant in the library. She received her MS in Education in 1968 and was given the rank of Instructor-Assistant Order Librarian, working under Gene Birkhimer. From January through June of 1972 Betty was appointed Acting Order Librarian, and on July 1, 1972 she officially became Order Librarian, a position she remained in until her retirement. In July 1984 she was promoted to Assistant Professor. Between the years 1954 and 1963, Betty was married and had four daughters. Her retirement plans included working in her garden, traveling, and spending time with her seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Betty was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Anna. She will be remembered for her loving, caring, and generosity of spirit. Her Christian faith was her great strength. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, reading, working her crossword puzzles and watching her beloved Atlanta Braves baseball. She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her unconditional love and unwavering adoration for her family will be greatly missed. Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jean (Odle) Hutton will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Anna, with Pastor Tim Weiser, Pastor Matthew Hartline and Pastor Joe Lecke officiating. Entombment will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. and until the service hour at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anna. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church. Envelopes will be available at the church and Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home of Anna.
