Barbara Kay Goforth, age 74 of Jonesboro, died at 5:55 pm, Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Jonesboro Rehab and Care Center. Kay was born on September 17, 1938 in Cairo, the daughter of Byron L. and Laura Maude (Brookins) Connell, Sr. Kay married Charles W. Goforth on May 26, 1957 in Mounds. Kay is survived by her husband, Charles Goforth of Jonesboro; one son, Charles J. (Sherri) Goforth of Anna; one daughter, Angela K. Goforth of Pontoon Beach; six grandchildren, Blake, Brent and Brock Goforth and Taylor, Brady and Emily Battles; one brother, Jack B. (Cathy) Connell of Cape Girardeau, MO; one sister-in-law, Vicky (R.J.) McKinney of Cape Girardeau, MO; nieces and nephews; cousins including Jeorge Ann Ambruster and aunt, Evelyn Lockard; other relatives and many friends. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Byron L. Connell II. Barbara Kay was affectionately called "Miss Kay" by the many children she taught at Sunday school and Mission Friends for forty years. Kay was a member of the Mounds Methodist Church in her youth, then later she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Thebes, later moving her membership to the 1st Baptist Church of Jonesboro and then to the Anna Heights Baptist Church.Kay worked with mission groups and was a founding member of the Thebes Historical Society. Kay was an active leader of the Girl Scouts and was a member of the Otahki Girl Scout Council. Kay was also a member of the Thebes Women's Club and the Alexander County Home Extension and she was active in supporting senior citizen programs. Kay was also involved in the ladies Golf Association at the Union County Country Club and she worked as a substitute post master for fourteen years.Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Kay Goforth will be conducted at 11:00 am, December 5, 2012 at the Anna Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Roath and Rev. Mike Parry officiating. Interment will be in the Rosehill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral home in Anna on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 from 5 until 8:00 pm and also on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at the Anna Heights Baptist Church from 9:00 am until the funeral hour at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the Rendleman & Hileman Funeral Home and at the Anna Heights Baptist Church.
